The Sparrow Mindset

Are you familiar with the story of the Sparrow in the Bible?

If you are feeling anxious, worried or frustrated in any area of your life right now the lesson of the sparrow will give you great hope! Perhaps you are at your wits end and simply don’t know where to turn or what to do. Has your world been shaken and you’re searching for an answer to the mess you are in? Have the things you’ve placed your hope and security in let you down? The answer you are seeking cannot be found in people, governments or this turbulent world we live in. It lies in the secure and unshakable promises of God. In the lesson of the sparrow in Matthew 6:26-27 Jesus gives us the answer we are seeking. He says…"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” Notice that Jesus says the birds aren’t planting or harvesting anything and God is still feeding them. There is not one single day that the birds go uncared for. They aren’t sitting on a branch depressed and anxious, wondering if God is going to provide for them. Why do you think Jesus used a small, seemingly insignificant bird to make His point?  To clearly show YOU how important YOU are to Him! YOU are His prized possession…His greatest creation! If He will take care of a little bird then rest assured my friend He most assuredly will take care of YOU!  But the key here is that you have to BELIEVE that! Your doubt blocks His power! Your negative words block his ability to help you! When we worry about how we’re going to pay our bills or how we’re going to get our healing we stop the flow of God’s blessings. God’s power lies in your confidence that HE LOVES YOU!  When you worry and stress God can’t get the supply to you. God wants you to have the attitude of the sparrow. The bird is carefree because it KNOWS that God will take care of it. The next time you doubt God will take care of your needs go outside and find a bird. Does the bird look worried? “But I’m not a bird” you say.  “I’m a real person with real problems that need real solutions!”  Exactly! Jesus knows this!  This is why he asks the question “are you not much more valuable that they?"  He is telling YOU to trust in His love for YOU!

How can you learn to trust Him if you never have a need? How can you learn to rely on Him if your trust is always in your job, your 401K, your education or your spouse? God wants to be your source period! He doesn’t want you to depend on another person, the government, your skills or your pension! There is no gray area here my friend! Once you are rooted in God’s love for you His power is released into your life! This is when you experience His healing, His deliverance and His promises! You see, God’s power is in your confidence that He loves you because God IS love! Your healing is a result of the sense that God loves you! 

People that are scared, bitter and negative are not rooted in God’s love. They have put their trust in the things of this world and the world has failed them. Many people become bitter after divorces, after failed business ventures, after a loss in their life because they don’t think like a sparrow. They don’t believe God loves them enough to take care of them. They may think they have faith until a crisis comes into their life and then what they really have faith in comes to light. A faith not tested is a faith that cannot be trusted. We truly don’t know what’s in our hearts until we go through a trial. What comes out of your mouth in times of trouble clearly indicates what you believe. The question is…”can you have the mindset of the sparrow when your refrigerator is empty? When you just lost your job? When you have exhausted all of your savings and don’t know how to pay your bills? When your child is sick and you don’t know what to do? We can’t know God as our source until we have a need.  Six years ago our 10 yr. old daughter Kaeli was making a card for our precious friend Little Mary who was battling cancer. Sometimes it takes the pure eyes of a child to see God’s wisdom. The card said…”Doctors have the medicine but God is the cure.”  WOW! How natural was her response to Mary’s battle.  Perhaps this is why God tells us to approach Him with simple, childlike faith. When I ask Kaeli “Why will God heal Mary”? she quickly responded…“because God loves her!” She didn’t seek any deep spiritual answer or try to over analyze it. She simply spoke from her heart. Jesus loves Mary like she is the only one on this planet! And He loves YOU my friend the very same way! He can LOVE us ALL this much because HE IS LOVE! Our small human brains cannot comprehend this kind of love.  It’s mind boggling and so very wonderful! How blessed we are to serve such an amazing God!

The law and religion tells you to love God with all your heart, all your mind and all your soul. Who in the world can do that?  We have been taught love from the perspective of religion and the law. Trying to love God without a Savior is futile. There is no one on this earth that can love God like this!  We all have areas of our mind and our heart that are not committed to Him.  This is WHY we need a Savior to help us love God! Our struggle is trying to keep a law that was never intended to keep without a Savior. The only person that has been able to keep this law is Jesus Christ. If man was able to keep all of God’s commandments then we wouldn’t need a Savior! Our focus does not need to be how much we love God but how much HE LOVES US! We’ve had it backwards. Religion has put the focus on US. Our focus must be on HIM and HIS love for us. When we now look at this scripture it makes so much more sense to us. 

The good news today my friend is this…GOD LOVES YOU!  He loves you like no one else will or can ever love YOU! No matter how bleak your circumstances may seem God is with YOU and He loves YOU  Have the mindset of a sparrow and don’t worry! Have the attitude…”God loves ME and will take care of me. I’ll have my supply everyday. I must act like God loves me no matter how I feel. I will get up and press on no matter how I feel because God loves me!” Commit to having this mindset and you will release the awesome power of God into your life.
